Adeline Organic Eye Serum

I have never been a "product person" ... at least, not until I started my review blogs... now all of a sudden I'm getting all kinds of opportunities to try different skin care products out, and I'm kinda liking it! So I was excited to have the chance to try out some new products this last week.

You can purchase this product here:

Adeline's Organic Eye Serum is an "Anti Aging and Anti Wrinkle Eye Serum with Aloe, Cucumber Extract, Chamomile Extract, Antioxidants and Vitamins A, C, and E". Formulated to reduce dark circles under your eyes caused by aging, toxins, poor sleep, pollutants, and sun damage and a healthier, more youthful glow, this serum is paraben and alcohol-free, which as a Massage Therapist is very important to me.

However, soon after applying the serum the skin under my eyes felt like it was burning. When I looked in the mirror, I could see that the skin under my eyes was turning red and seemed irritated. I generally don't have sensitive skin so this was surprising to me. So I started going through the ingredients.

Generally, I really liked what I saw there ... most of the ingredients are of an "Organic" nature (I put "Organic" in quotes because they are plant based, but this product is not labeled  "USDA Certified Organic" so we have to take their word that these ingredients have been grown and harvested by Organic standards). Unfortunately there was one ingredient that caught my eye that I didn't recognize, and that was Phenoxyethanol (and with a name like that you KNOW it's not going to be organic in any way, shape, or form!)

So, I looked it up, and the Environmental Working Group (EWG) puts it as a "Low Moderate Hazard" ... with "Limited evidence of nervous toxicity" and "Classified as an irritante". Hmmmmm, so that may explain the reaction I had! However given that the EWG had it at a "low moderate" risk, I figured that while the risk of toxicity is low I'd do more digging.  (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/704811/PHENOXYETHANOL/)

I found some more info at the Truth in Aging website about the possibility of Phenoxyethanol as an irritant:

"I also came across a report written by a medical professional who contracted allergies after coming into contact with phenoxyethanol in a detergent used for cleaning lab equipment.  It seems he wasn't a fluke. There are over 3,000 known allergans and they were studied, along with the data from 9,948 patients, by a research team in Germany. Phenoxyethanol was in the top 10. An Italian study also determined that phenoxyethanol is a contact allergan. However, a 1990 article in the Journal of the American College of Toxicology said that it was only a mild irritant to rabbit skin at 2%.https://www.truthinaging.com/review/phenoxyethanol-is-it-safe

Supposedly this ingredient is the replacement for Parabens, which is a chemical that has been widely used to stabilize many products for years now, but which has taken a bad rap for it's potentially carcinogenic properties. So odds are you are going to see this in a lot of products that you buy, unless you look for the "USDA Certified Organic" label.

Even with all of that, I actually liked what the product did. Once the redness went down (about 1 hr) the skin around my eyes felt a lot tighter and smoother. The next time I used it, I didn't have quite as bad of a reaction. So for now I will try this at night, and see how things go. Generally I believe this is a good product with just one questionable ingredient (which is FAR better than most products out there). I hope that the company will try to find something to replace that with in the future.... and for those reading this, just be aware that you should ALWAYS read the ingredients on the labels of anything you put in OR on your body so you can CHOOSE what you are exposed to on a daily basis.

I received this product for a fair and honest review. All opinions are mine alone.
